Coson Declares September 1 As ‘No Music Day’

The Copyright Society of Nigeria (COSON) has declared Thursday September 1, 2011 as a ‘No Music Day’ throughout Nigeria. The declaration was made in a statement issued by COSON president Chief Tony Okoroji on Friday, August 26, 2011.

Okoroji says the day ‘will be dedicated to drawing national attention to the widespread infringement of the rights of composers, song writers, performers, music publishers and other stakeholders in the music industry in Nigeria’.

Similarly, the Nigerian Music Industry Coalition have requested that all broadcasting stations dedicate time on the same day to granting and airing interviews, debates or any other program related to artistes rights as a way of supporting the cause.

This isn’t the first time a protest of this sort would hold as it was first staged throughout the country two years ago on Tuesday, September 1, 2009.

In 2009, the compliance level was low, but the facilitators said at the time that the campaign was a success judging by the level of awareness and debate that followed the advocacy.

This also spurred the apprehension and prosecution of the notorious ‘Alaba King of Pirates’, Tony Onwujekwe and consequently the birth of COSON.

No word yet from PMAN, the umbrella body for musicians in Nigeria. And we’re yet to confirm which stations (TV and Radio) will be joining in the ‘No Music Day’ campaign…

Mercy Johnson wept when Genevieve Nnaji walked into her wedding

By the time you’re reading this, Nollywood actress Mercy Johnson has been a married woman for two days (in the native calculation) and one day (if you follow the church’s calculation). The traditional marriage which was anchored by veteran MC and entertainer Madam Kofo took place on the 26th of August 2011, while the white (church) wedding followed a day after.

Nollywoodgossip learned that during the colorful traditional marriage, Mercy made short speech: “I am very happy for this day. It is a leap of faith for me and I believe God will be with me. I thank all those that stood by me, my family, friends and team. Today shows that love has triumphed’.

The white wedding anchored by funnyman AY was a class of its own. It was clear that Mercy went all out to make the wedding an expensive event, what with Bentleys, Hummer limos, and all kinds of exotic vehicles scattered everywhere.

The wedding which pulled more crowd than expected saw people from Nollywood, the music industry, politics, and other eminent personalities gather to honor the actress on her happiest day.

The church wedding took place at Christ Embassy headquarters, Oregun Road, Lagos, with Pastor Tom as officiating minister, and after the new couple was presented with the certificate of marriage, the crowd rode down to 10 Degrees events center, Oregun for the reception.

An Ishan acrobatic dance group thrilled the audience, and it was at the reception hall that many Nollywood stars that couldn’t make it to the church started trooping in. Emeka Ike, Jim Iyke, Segun Arinze, Kenneth Okonkwo, Patience Ozokwo, and Chinedu Ikedieze all appeared one after another.

But what broke Mercy down into a mass of tears was the sudden appearance of Genevieve Nnaji. Mercy wept for about five minutes and had to be consoled by many people, including the anchor. Mercy later confided to close friends that Genevieve is her idol and her appearance meant the world to her. Mercy was also very happy that Tricia Eseigbe-Kerry whom she respects so much made it, together with her husband Kingsley Kerry.

When the couple took to the floor for a dance, the crowd besieged them, making money rain on them. It was reported that Genevieve Nnaji surprised everyone with the large amount of money she sprayed on Mercy. Others said to have also sprayed large amount of money on the dancing queen and her husband were Mike Ezuruonye, Emeka Presh and Tricia Eseigbe-Kerry who all sprayed large amount in dollars.

The party was still on when Mercy and her husband sneaked out of the venue in a private car leaving their Hummer limos and Mercy’s Bentley behind so that people would think they were still around.

All in all, it was a very successful wedding.

The star-studded bridal train included Waje, Empress Njamah, Chika Ike, Queen Nwokoye, and Goldie, while Ghanaian actress, Yvonne Nelson, was the chief bridesmaid.

Some of the stars who attended the wedding include, Genevieve Nnaji, Emeka Ike, Jim Iyke, Segun Arinze, Kenneth Okonkwo, Patience Ozokwo, Chinedu Ikedieze, Majid Mitchel, Francis Duru, speaker of Edo State House of Assembly, DJ Jimmy Jatt, Mike Ezuruonye and many others.
